Brilliant Brunette should not be so quick to criticize. First, Germans especially younger people do say "Ich mag ..." such as "Ich mag Eis." (I like ice cream.). "Eis gefaelt mir" is more formal, but as my German exchange student told me, none of her friends ( probably not even her parents) would use the formal version. Also note it is "defaelt" not "glaubt", which means believe.
